Venice - Redentore Fireworks
together across a faade, caressing the sunlit stone in
a sensuous exploration of the surface. This is a different matter, with surging hulls in crashing seas, ropes
flogging on billowing sails and light changing as rapidly
as the helmsmans course, I was confronted by an exhilaration of action and beauty which thrills the soul. To
me this was not languid life drawing of a beautiful nude
so much as the urgent capturing of an incredible athlete
in motion. In the same way that Stubbs captured the
speed of a racehorse, I wanted to paint action rather
than accuracy and to be exhilarating rather than slapdash. Photographs of racehorses are often disappointing, but paintings by Stubbs are not.
