EDITORIAL T his issue presents works by eminent interior designers, architects and decorators Timothy Corrigan, John Barman, Madison Spencer, AGi Architects, Palladio and Manuela Bedeschi. Timothy Corrigan designs an imposing red entrance hall for a Los Angeles showhouse. John Barman conceives a visually alluring design for a house on Long Islands east end. A classic Virginia country house by Madison Spencer employs period antiques, inviting the 18th century comfortably to the present. AGi Architects design a seductive Secret house. Separated by centuries, Palladio and Manuela Bedeschi, two devotees of paired-down design, have common stylistic ground. Thats only the front, there is much more. Italy, in part due to the reunification brought about by the Resorgimento in the mid-19th century may, for cultural tourists especially, now be thought of as la Serinissima, the most serene. Originally applied only to Venice at the height of its political, economic and cultural power, this La Serinissima issue of HYLAND captures some of the serene aspects in Italian art, design, decoration, architecture and culinary delights. Princetons eminent Leonard Barkan reminisces about authoring his acclaimed book Michelangelo: A Life on Paper. Nick Barberio photographs Roman street scenes. Acclaimed novelist Lorenzo Carcaterra reveals the roots of his passion for Italy. Richard Wendorf, the former director of Harvards Houghton Library and now director of the American Museum in Britain, delves into the continuing allure of That Hamilton Woman. Cambridge Universitys Alexander Restel sheds new light on the late work of Florentine artist Sandro Botticelli. HYLAND
