These works are consummate examples of a crisper,
more figurative Impressionism. Select any section of
Salute, magnify it, and you will experience Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism on steroids. That aside, in
many instances Creswells paintings provide the same
exciting cognitive experiences of mid-century Modernists. In doing so, they are welcomed additions to collections of every bent.
In Salute, which greets me every morning on the opposite wall when I awaken, the small passage door near
the monumental door is slightly ajar. It reveals a small
vertical panel of light, a separate oval reflection of light
just to the top of it. I have often thought that this chance
abstraction of an illuminated candle is a metaphor for
Creswells entire oeuvre. Creswell invites us to see the
light in glorious things and ways. H By Christopher Hyland
