support NYRPs continuing efforts. In another, a community
boathouse was restored, becoming the first on the Harlem
River in a hundred years.
In 1999, when 114 community gardens throughout the city
were threatened with commercial development, Boston Common came to mind again. These spaces needed to be preserved as micro-Commons for each of the neighborhoods
involved. NYRP and I created the New York Garden Trust
which assured that they would remain public gardens in perpetuity.
Arbor Day always reminds me of Joyce Kilmers memorable line, I think that I shall never see, a thing as lovely as a
tree. Trees on the Boston Common surrounding that tent
were magnificent. I didnt hesitate for a moment to join forces
with New York Mayor Bloomberg in an extensive reforestation
campaign, Million Trees NYC (MTNYC). By 2017, one million
new trees will have been planted and cared for. One hundred
NYRP staff members and Team Americorps are committed
to seeing this project and others implemented.
