pasture for the community. Now several hundred years later, it is the principal Boston park. Around it and in it countless generations have been provided Arcadian experiences.
Commons, throughout New England, and parks there and
throughout the country are daily permanently on duty, serving
the same notable purpose. Fascinated by their role, I became
determined to contribute to enhancing the life of parks.
Seeing a need when I returned to live in New York City in
1995 to improve parks, community gardens and open space,
I founded New York Restoration Project (NYRP). Beginning
with Upper Manhattan���s Fort Tryon Park and continuing mostly
through economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, NYRP
has brought together community organizations, corporate
volunteers, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and volunteer groups to clean, improve, design and
generally transform these spaces for the common good. In
one instance, a dilapidated park concessions building was
transformed into a fine dining establishment whose profits
