In fact, back then the first law of the College was that only those who were able to read Cicero or similar authors at sight—and, in addition, to speak and write and versify in Latin—would be admitted. If that were still a requirement of applicants today, this year of admissions to our university would not seem so tough. If any of you is thinking, "I never would have been able to come here then," you're right. Perhaps you could have gone to that university in New Haven. But all of you actually know more Latin than you may think. For you can find Latin sayings relevant to our life at Harvard in many conspicuous places at this university. First is the expression that stands on the shield, the one word that we all definitely recognize, that most celebrated Harvard maxim, VERITAS. That is the virtue which guides us and which we have learned. We have sought truth in the volumes of Widener Library or in conversations in the Greenhouse Café or in the pages of the Crimson. We have revealed the truth about professors and TFs in the Q Guide and found out the truth about the relationship status of our friends on Facebook. The second text of Harvardian Latin is the history inscribed above the stage of Sanders Theatre. You probably noticed it the one time you weren't paying at- tention in Ec 10 lecture. The words there remind us that we, "as if stars for all time everlasting," should teach many others according to the principles of justice. If only we had done the readings assigned by Michael Sandel! Nevertheless, we have learned at this uni- versity, and we will teach beyond its walls. HYLAND
