The third Latin saying is the inscription above the Class of 1857 Gate in that corner of Harvard Yard. The inscrip- tion is composed of verses of the poet Horace: Thrice happy and more are they whom an unbroken bond unites, and whom no sun- dering of love by wretched quarrels shall separate before the final day! We are thrice happy and more, because our bonds with one another will not be broken, and our love for this university will not be weakened, for the rest of our days. Let us depart remembering our friends, teachers, and profes- sors, and let us go forth blessed with our new wisdom! But let us return after lunch to hear the debates about the pronuncia- tion of Greek. Congratulations, and farewell! H HYLAND
