resident Faust, deans, professors, alumni and alumnae, relatives and parents, and finally my classmates, who are about to graduate in this year 2008, welcome! Perhaps I seem a little ridiculous, speaking Latin before you all in this day and age. You may be wondering, "Why is that guy giving a speech in a language we don't understand?" But you should know that things could have been worse. Three hundred fifty-six years ago, at the first Harvard commencement, besides the Latin oration, there was another one, in Greek. Apparently then the students did not have to sleep off a hangover from the preceding week . After lunch, everyone returned to debate in Latin about such burning ques- tions as whether Greek is pro- nounced according to word accents . So let's be glad that the times have changed.
