Malinowski was the first to study the Kula exchange; we visited those villages. We went, too, to the Trobriand Islands made famous by Mauss, where Kula rings are also exchanged. The Dobu, villages of the witches, is the territory explored and made famous by Margaret Mead. Her husband, Gregory Bateson, was actually the one to study the tribal witches. Was there a point during the expedition where you found something endearing? Yes, children with spears coming to welcome us. When you arrive, your hosts greet you with a pantomime of spear attack and in principle you are meant to respond in kind. At the Dobu village, dozens of children hiding behind a huge mango tree swarmed around us with spears, triggered by the sound of a war shell. I only regret I did not have a spear to enter the conversation with them according to custom! HYLAND Credit: 14MPM
