Have you made any works of art during or just after your visit? Yes, I have created "Voglio una donna" ("I want a woman," a title inspired by a quote from Fellini's film Amarcord) as an homage to my trip to New Guinea. What would be the most memorable ritual you saw? The Serpent Dance of the Baruyas along the Sepik River was close to my heart, close to my work. Men massed in rows form the body of a serpent, with an elaborate mask at the head. The most incredible dance was the Baining Fire Dance— the most electrifying, the most galvanizing. Men covered in layers of green vegetation donning huge bark masks— impersonating bats and other animals—dance through the flames in a trance, all to resolve village problems. Did you visit any areas made famous by anthropologists Malinowski, Mauss and Mead? HYLAND Credit: 14MPM; Mike Moore
