My other memorable experience was of my fellow travelers. It impressed me how many older travelers who seem to have health problems manage to be game towards any form of torture the expedition puts you through! For example, walking at 4am through jungle to see the birds of paradise. I have to say my companions were very interesting. It was inspiring to see older people climbing hills in the dark to see a bird, among them an 89 and 94-year-old. What did you come away with from this experience? I discovered a dimension of reality that bears respect and understanding. This attitude drove my exploration from the beginning—profound interest and respect. In Papua New Guinea, if you hoard, you die. If you're stingy, you die. I dare not hold on too tightly to these memories, for in Kula tradition, to be overly possessive is tantamount to death.
