when ���The Iron Horse��� Lou Gehrig made the decision
to take the bench, realizing that his acclaimed career
had come to an abrupt end after a record setting 2,130
consecutive games played. A waning number of fans
may remember, but much fewer still bore witness to the
tearful farewell shortly thereafter that signaled the end of
an era, one that lingers in collective memory transferred
forward to subsequent generations.
