In the event, even though the
process leading to the Knights���
return to Malta was initiated
by the Labour government,
the bipartisan support that was
achieved enabled, in part, the
Nationalist Party government
formed by Prime Minister
Fenech Adami to implement the
plan shortly after it subsequently
came to power in 1987. Also,
under Fenech Adami, after
much hard work and singular
leadership, Malta entered the
European Community.
The new Grand Master Fra���
Bertie would go on to double,
from approximately fifty to one
hundred, the bilateral diplomatic
relationships between the Order
and other countries. He would
also initiate countless conferences
in many countries.
A large gathering of knights in
Malta celebrated the Order���s
nine-hundredth anniversary in
the 1980���s.
