Guido DeMarco, the late President of Malta, wrote that Fra Andrew always took part in discussions but leaving space for his guests to put forward their opinions and thoughts, creating an atmosphere of exchange of ideas, which was never labored and always cordial. These words encapsulate my memory of him. The man of whom I write, Fra Andrew Bertie, would become the 78th Grand Master of the Order of Malta upon the death of Fra Angelo de Mojana. He would later, together with the Maltese Government, oversee the transfer of Fort San Angelo to the Order. When I returned from Rome to visit my beloved Saint Johns co-cathedral, I felt far more affinity and camaraderie with the Knights commemorated there. Mindful of the sheer audacity of Prime Minister Bonnicis seizing the moment and propelling my proposal forward, for which to this day I have great respect, my encounter with the Grand Master would remain the single most significant moment for me in the entire experience. Two men could not have been in so many ways the opposite. But, both, putting ideology aside, in their own way had committed themselves to assist the needy and the poor. They were bookends. I was pleased to have been able to align them on the same shelf. The substance, the volumes, would be Fort Saint Angelo and all that it would be to the Malta milieu. HYLAND
