I took these photographs as a helicopter with powerful
searchlights hovered for over an hour above the apartment
buildings across the street from mine. The entire scene reminded
me of the romance and imagination of the nocturnal hours.
The scene would have inspired Rockwell Kent. I imagined
Longfellow's three young daughters gathering around him in
any one of the abodes depicted in these photographs, as he
recounts in his poem, The Children's Hour. Then I thought of
Stevenson's poems, still in my library.
But the larger story is not always a pleasant one. As recounted
