Salute has resonated for me since my schooldays. It
was erected in thanks by Venetians for the Plague���s end.
Over the years it became a sort of architectural talisman,
a prayer in stone and mortar. As my aesthetic eye grew
into adulthood, I came to think of Salute as the Balboa
of its day. Creswell���s intriguing portrayal of the church,
executed literally from a watery step at the Grand Canal���s edge, is infused with psychological depth and insight. This watercolor is the first ever made using large
seamless paper.
Subsequently, Creswell has executed a body of work
comprising the largest scale watercolors produced thus
far by a single artist. Subjects include historic American
