Syrie Maugham Lyre Tables
Kings Road
She drew inspiration from great Baroque and Rococo
rooms, from French antiques and from the Modernist
cadre. Dolphins, shells, reeds, cords abound sculpturally in her work. But Maugham, drawing on all of them,
made her famous white rooms comfortable and modern. Her work resonates today almost a hundred years
later. Many sparse interiors call for her reasonable eclecticism.
Having worked in Great Britain and Europe, Maugham
eventually decorated throughout the United States thus
sealing her international reputation. To this day Syrie Maugham-inspired lounge, arm and corner chairs
abound. She substantially, through her decoration, memorialized for visual history, the glamorous, shimmering
style that may be described as the English country seat
gone Hollywood. Satin upholstery, fur carpets, mirrored
screens and palm frond consoles were her signatures.
