Syrie Maugham
Maughams interiors were eclectic. Reimagined antiques,
often Baroque, and sleek, highly angular couches, emblematic of the Deco era, cohabited. She branded every
antique with her hallmark of white paint or craquelure,
creating a glamorous style. Her white rooms were quite
different from those created, for example, by Charles
Rennie Mackintosh and his antecedents in the Arts &
Crafts and Aesthetic Movements (NB: an avatar of the
latter, J.M. Whistler painted Regency furniture white).
These earlier rooms were the vision of one consistent
architectural style. Hers were not.
