plaster decorative pieces at Tourtane House. The gardens are
lush and the houses often contain exotic and esoteric memorabilia. I found the souvenirs at Cappoquin of the first BritishAfghan war intriguing.
Compelling personalities have fallen under Lismores spell. I
once thought how utterly remarkable it would be if Lucien
Freud, a frequent visitor, painted a selection of Lismore denizens. This fanciful oeuvre would include James II, Edward
VII, Cyril Connolly, Harold MacMillan, Bloomsburys Duncan Grant, Fred and Adele Astaire, Hubert de Givenchy and
less well-known personalities like Clodagh Anson, Billy Flynn,
John OBrien and Paddy Leigh-Fermor, whose love of the place
and its owners form an indelible Lismore ethos.
