Having spoken to both Cavendishes, father and son, about
Lismore and more particularly, their great pile in England,
Chatsworth, I am impressed by how committed and organized
the Cavendish family is in sustaining these important properties. The properties define their family but are also in part catalysts and backdrops to the story of nations and vital to modern tourism, and in Lismore���s case, Irish tourism. After all,
arguably, the first great feminist in the English-speaking world
was probably the most beautiful woman of her age, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. Also notable was Prime Minister
Harold MacMillan, a family uncle, and Joseph Kennedy who
was father-in-law to a future duke who became the brother-inlaw of John Kennedy.
But for the tragedy of war, Lismore would have become the
HYLAND
