HYLAND
apartment buildings gracing entire quarters of the city,
notably the Eixample, where I stayed in the summer of
1993 before returning to New York City after seven years
spent studying and writing in Europe. So splendid were
the environs of Barcelona that I was tempted to enroll
for yet another academic adventure at
the Fundacio Eina, Barcelona's school
of design, founded in 1967. Barcelona's
design scene in the 1990s was just
as lively as it was a century before; it
remains so to this day.
BD Barcelona, founded in 1972 as Bd
Ediciones de Diseno by architects and
interior designers Pep Bonet, Cristian
Cirici, Lluis Clotet, Mirela Riera and
Oscar Tuscets is an inspired, almost
museological producer of designer
furniture of the Modern Movement,
stretching back to Gaudi's time and
including reproductions of certain of
his designs as well as those of his
contemporary, Jujol. BD's repertoire is
determinedly international, showcasing
works by Ross Lovegrove and Ettore Sotsass, for
example, but it is as a manufacturer of work by both
new and historical Spanish designers that the group is
of special interest.
