HYLAND
Barcelona is a city almost impossibly rich in
architectural jewels, of which the most famous is Antoni
Gaudi's masterwork, la Sagrada Familia, begun in 1915
and scheduled to be completed a mind-boggling 112
years later, in 2027, having since 1987 been under the
direction of Jordi Bonet I Armengol with the sculptural
decoration worked on by a long retinue of artists,
including Jaume Busquets and Josep Maria Subirachs
(creator of the Passion façade). But apart from the actual
buildings by Gaudi which ornament the city and his
influence, which permeates it, are a myriad of beautiful
edifices, many dating from the turn of the 19th century.
Only in Paris have I seen equal number and quality of
art nouveau buildings, many of them haut bourgeois
