art in public spaces."
Equally optimistic about the future, the gallerists at
the nearly 100 year old Norske Grafikere are devoted to
helping young graphic artists. Over 4000 prints (intaglio,
relief, screen and lithography, etc.) are found here, and
even if a calm oasis, it
has a magnetic drawing
power.
Graphics are
similarly spotlighted at
Kunstverket, a space
committed to promoting
"established artists,"
and to "challenging"
them to discover
new techniques (in
the summer solo
exhibitions are held in
a picturesque 600-square meter timber-framed building,
only accessible by boat).
Founded by an association of artists, Gallerie LNM,
featuring contemporary paintings, is similarly disposed
to aiding emerging talents, while another collaborative
group runs the Norske Kunsthandverkerne gallery. It's a
shop featuring the hand-made works of local artisans,
everything from colorful ceramics and silver, precious-
stone jewelry to dazzlingly sculptured glassware.
