is a 19th century Italian sculpture of a gladiator with chariot and horses—Bastone's familiar heroic battle-cry in bronze, a call to all decorators to summon the most lavish forms and materials money can buy. Indeed, in the TV room Bastone has spared nothing to make of it an exceptionally soothing enclave, upholstering the walls, richly sheathing the windows with an ivory wool fabric from Christopher Hyland. At the center of the room is a coffee table made of precious stones; the table lamps, too, are of smoky quartz, with insets of walnut, designed by Bastone. Leave it to Steve to discover a Prelle fabric by the name of "Bizaare", in turquoise, white and brown, which looks for all the world like an Art Deco relic, but is in fact a 17th century design from between 1690 and 1720. The fabric, and Stephen Bastone's totalized interior at the Delmonico's Building lead me, as usual, to wax literary in my praise of him, this time quoting Shakespeare: "Nothing of him that doth fade, But suffer a sea-change Into something rich and strange…" H HYLAND
