In a daring pairing, Bastone has matched this sedately fanciful seat with two swooping fauteuils by eccentric Italian 1940s designer Paolo Buffa, upholstered in brown silk sateen from Prelle, a custom fabric. In the living room are more mid-century marvels: a 1940s Dassi coffee table of marble, parchment and glass; tall gilt lamps by 1950s American designer Tommi Parzinger; 1940s mirrors by Fontana Arte from Newell Gallery. Paolo Buffa might be seen as, to Milan, what Haines was to Hollywood, an inspired, sometimes quixotic reinventor of the classical for the chicest of locals. In the TV room sits one of Buffa's magnificent liquor cabinets, its stately doors embellished with horizontal panels of neoclassical Roman etchings behind glass. Surmounting the cabinet HYLAND
