HYLAND is love, and that love heals. Dr. Grey's message is anything but simplistic, for he acknowledges that love is all too often a matter of luck. Dr. Grey clearly believes in talk therapy as an often powerful instance of love. On psychoanalysis, the Freudian variety now so out of fashion, he follows the precepts of Harry Stack Sullivan, one of which, memorably, was, "It is easier to act your way into a new way of feeling than to feel yourself into a new way of acting." Sullivan emphasized a wider interpersonal context for individual development than that of the nuclear family. My sentiments exactly. If compassion cures, action transforms. Dr. Grey is nearly one hundred years old, and here speaks, movingly, of how his experiences in World War II—and elsewhere—changed his way of feeling, especially for others. Lisa Zeiger What do you tihnk of contemporary art? I find modern style degrading and upsetting and it doesn't give me the tranquillity that as a boy I was taught to expect from art. How does the world of modern art relate to the world of psychology you were involved in? e world of psychology I was involved in I am no longer part of. I have been practicing psychoanalysis and psychotherapy for at least five decades. I come up with the most banal conclusions-- those that priests and rabbis have come up with--that love heals. I just retired a few weeks ago, and in a way I miss my work and I'm very flattered that my patients miss me; many have called to see me again. Empathic understanding is really the healing power, if any, in my work. I
