HYLAND n encounter with Dr. Alan Lewis Grey, the recently retired New York psychoanalyst, whose profession is to alleviate human unhappiness, is bound to be interesting. Christopher Hyland, sat with Dr. Grey, his neighbor, and the two spoke of art and empathy, discovering common ground, Dr. Grey enunciating sometimes surprising echoes of Christopher's beliefs about the impact of the micro- and macro- environment on the individual. I, who could dismiss all of my experiences with therapists, although not my assiduous study of psychoanalytic theory, was happy to witness the exchange of Energizer Bunny Christopher, happy all the time, with an eminent authority on the human mind. Dr. Grey, throughout his career, has been thought-provoking, accustomed to challenging received ideas about the psyche and therapy, especially the now universally disputed ideas of Freud on sex and on women. He departs from Freud as well in advocating a far more socially conscious conception of individual development, one in which the individual is shaped as much by "class and economic position" as by the individual's parental situation. Freud's theories were conditioned by his almost claustrophobic contact with a rarefied group, in contrast to Dr. Grey's engagement with a broad swathe of society.
