as both muse and maker. The earliest posters, of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, are mostly by men: William Bradley, Max Burchartz, Frank Hazenplug and Jules Cheret. It is Russia, both in the Constructivist and Bolshevik periods, that brings forward women as graphic designers, some of whom, notably Varvara Stepanova and Lyubov Popova, are well known as painters. The sere red and black of these images makes them all the more impressive. As of the April 14th reinstallation of the graphics portion of the exhibition, MOMA has added graphic art by and/or of women that confronts the theme, "Women at War;" the tools and automobiles (and weaponry?) longed for by Ken Johnson will likely, at least on paper, be here.
