Vautrin, the daughter of a family of metal founders, began
casting at fourteen and never looked back, selling her
first pieces at fifteen; after working a mere four days at
the house of Schiaparelli she decided to work on her
own, selling her pieces door to door in Paris from "a little
suitcase." At the Paris International Exposition of 1937,
her stand attracted a clientele that enabled her to open
a tiny shop in the Rue de Berri. From 1943 on she had
a boutique on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore, the
entrance crowned with a statue of St. Eligius, patron saint
of goldsmiths. Her actual workshop in the Marais, praised
as a model of social enterprise, contributed to the redis-
