HYLAND Julian Schnabel is a great artist. [Points to a painting.] It's very interesting that at the moment he is undervalued. His branching into the movie industry (which has been phenomenal—The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, and Basquiat, for example). I feel, in a way, has temporarily diluted his status in the art forum. But I don't think, for a moment his fame is over. This artist is a giant, and here to stay. What about your career trajectory? When I was a kid, younger than you even, when I was in my early twenties, twenty-two, twenty-three, I had earned a diploma in London, focused on fashion and interiors. When I went back to South Africa I began designing a fashion collection twice a year, for a boutique launched with two friends of mine. I was also simultaneously, running a decorating gallery. I found myself "flavor of the month" and was very successful. Back from London, hair worn on my shoulders, it was a new look, and very different from the Johannesburg scene. I was a novelty and the press coverage was very generous. But I realized after three years of this, that one can't serve two masters. One has to make up one's mind about what one wants to do. I was very ambitions, still am, and I thought, wow, even though it was a personal sacrifice for me, I stopped doing the collections and concentrated entirely on decorating and design. And that was the right move. It was a sacrifice, because I had LOVED it, as I love fashion. It was a significant career turning point for me, making that sacrifice, and absolutely dedicating my talents to one field – Interior Design. I like to think I learn
