Garden by Carlos Thays
possible the expression and the genius of places and
people, always bringing new and unsuspected results."
This is the pronouncement of Carlos Thays, landscape
artist and designer, working since 1978 in Estudio Thays, a
family business begun in 1889 when his great-grandfather,
Charles Thays (1849-1934) arrived from Paris. The first
Thays is famous for founding the Botanical Garden of
Buenos Aires (1892) located in the Palermo area of the city,
birthplace, incidentally of Jorge Luis Borges, whom we can
imagine strolling and ruminating through its precincts. The
main building of the Botanical gardens is an English style
mansion, built in 1881, which Thays and his family lived in
between 1892 and 1898, when he was director of parks
and walks in the city.
The present-day Thays' style and method comprise
preservation as much as intervention and expression.
