canvas tents—a sort of architectural triptych--painted
inside and out in intricate detail in tempera on cotton
and mixed media, which Clemente describes as his
'cave paintings', mobile chapels for contemplation of
the sacred in the digital age. Clemente's "Tents" were
produced in India, where Clemente spends part of each
year, in Varanasi. (Part of Clemente's artistic practice is
a privileged nomadism; as chronicled in his 1990 book,
Three Worlds, which brings together over a hundred
works on paper reflecting the artist's immersion in the
three cultures of Italy, India and New York.)
Tents are ancient, arguably among the first dwellings,
dating to the early Iron Age and mentioned in Genesis
