the gravitas of the word as well as the visual phenomenon
it describes, and indeed, his paintings often incorporate
words, erasures and elisions. His illustrations for poetry
books, more collaboration than accompaniment, include
texts by Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, John Wieners
and Salman Rushdie. Clemente's double literacy—his
immersion in visions and words and in the inherent, but
often forgotten connection between them—is one more
element of the essential gravitas of his own oeuvre.
