I were just standing, stunned. The next thing, the dog
wrestles the skateboard out of the guy's hands, puts his
right front paw on the board and starts pushing himself
down the sidewalk. He sailed right past us. I got my
shot and eventually the man got his board back, but the
encounter was both very funny and very scary."
Still, Davies's sympathy was probably with the skateboard
thief. "When I was a kid, our
family dog was an English
bulldog," she says. "I still
have a soft spot for any dog
with a pushed-in face. Since
then, I've always rescued my
dogs, so the breeds vary."
At the moment, she shares
her Avenue A apartment
with Suki, a 16-year-old Shih
Tzu, and Charlie, a 13-yearold poodle. "One was on
his way to the glue factory
when I grabbed him," she
says, "and the other was rescued out of a box when
he was two years old. Charlie the poodle is my muse. I
photograph him several times a week. He loves to have
his photo taken. When he sees the camera come out,
he runs and positions himself on the sofa."
Charlie may be a respite from her often emotional
encounters with others' pets. "Dogs wear their hearts on
