de Courances (previously
featured in HYLAND), and, of
course, Madeleine Castaing's
Maison de Leves near
Chartres.
I must mention a story from
French Interiors that brings me
special delight: de Nicolay's
portrait of an old friend, whom
I know only through magazine
pages, which left me thirsting
for more, namely the great
decorator Jacques Grange,
who lives in the apartment
once inhabited by the author
Colette, overlooking the
gardens of the Palais-Royal.
I remember, in the 1980s,
clipping a beautiful feature
from Vanity Fair that detailed
this apartment; Grange lives
there still, and, always a
work of art, it has ripened
into a masterwork enclosing
HYLAND
