an actual meeting house Turrell created for the Society
of Friends. The theme of meeting—of people with one
another, with art, with nature and with God—is the central
metaphor in all of Turrell's work. His works instigate all
four kinds of encounter; his art is that of the go-between,
the catalyst. His architecture does not merely surround,
it creates new thresholds: it incites.
Turrell's most famous work in progress, Roden Crater,
surpasses the monumental. Located outside Flagstaff,
