Modernism's early decades is dramatically, if not somberly,
expressed in Max Ingrand's Table Lamp in Burnished
Brass, c. 1960, Figures 19, 374 and 375. Aptly named
"Torn", this brutal table lamp comprises an ominous,
studded metal clamp-like device entrapping cracked
and split glass. The metal symbolizes fearful enterprise
and the glass, that enterprise's victims, a decorative
arts memorial to the vanquished of the century: quite a
lamp. Hope inhabits the light emanating from the core,
a divine faculty, a transcendent force. These men and
