A compelling example of
Imber's stylistic versatility is
Butcher Ranch, Gonzales
County,
Texas
which,
despite what I wrote above,
resembles nothing so much
as Mackintosh's Hill House.
Stark white, with three
gables, a tall chimney-assentinel and high, screened
porch the entire length of the
house, there is a Scottish
plainness
about
this
building, almost a monastic
feeling. But, then, so did the
buildings built by the United
States War Department
as virtual outposts and
fortresses of the Indian
Wars. These buildings
served as youthful and later
professional inspiration for
Imber. One finds the same
air of a monastic community,
albeit on a much larger
scale, in Imber's Escondido
Golf Reserve. The interior
