hunting horn to notify the staff that all hounds are
present.
Babbling A hound speaking or giving tongue when it
has not picked up the scent of the quarry.
Basset An extremely short-legged slow moving hunting
dog of a breed originated in France. It has crooked front
legs, a head resembling that of a bloodhound, and a coat
of typical hound color and texture. Dogs of this bread are
noted for their musical tongue on the trail. Their natural
quarry is hares and rabbits A rough-coated variety is the
basset griffon.
Beagle A small, short-legged, smooth coated hound said
to have originated as a definite breed in England at least
four centuries ago. Dogs of this breed are 12-15 inches
high, with pendulous ears, and coats of hound color, the
tricolor being common. They hunt small game.
Brace Two hounds usually run together in the hunting
field or in competition.
