When in Rome, do as the Romans do, or at least do as
a very specific Roman does: visit the renowned Papal
tailors, Gammarelli. Don't be dissuaded by the fact that
this over two hundred-year old firm are tailors to the
Pope and a wide swathe of clergy. They are happy to
suit you up in elegant attire of the laity as well. The sixth
generation of the Gammarelli family will also provide
sartorial counsel. Visiting the place is an adventure. It
seems an unofficial extension of the Vatican itself.
Located at via Santa Chiara 34, just off one irregular end
of the quintessentially Roman Piazza della Minerva, near
the famous Pantheon graced by a prerequisite fountain,
antique shops, cafes and ancient buildings, a visit to the
Gammarelli neighborhood is a charming excursion.
I would commission a three-piece suit from Gammarelli
in a heartbeat, for three reasons: superb tailoring, quality
