a fantastic array of contemporary highly innovative technology. However suitable a contemporary approach to the design might be, the memorial���s elements as proposed fail to convey beauty and dignity, let alone ingenious innovation for which Eisenhower is noted and which America must marshal now and in the future. In fairness to Eisenhower, the actions of his administration reflected the social opprobrium of the era, some of which contributed to the self-realization of citizens. He stood at a moment in history, steadfast, against forces of evil. This memorial requires more self realization of its highly artistic architect. It took over fifty years to realize the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial, sited on its own sylvan island in the Potomac River across from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (a vast, mid-century modern temple with roof and walls enclosing the structure). I attended the dedication. His daughter, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, was totally pleased, and, as was her typical opinionated attitude, she let me know just how pleased she was. Relatively recently, I made another visit, leaving Teddy Roosevelt���s Memorial with a strong sense that I had been to a beautiful place reflecting Roosevelt���s love of nature which led, in turn, to his championing the creation of the American national park system. The built component of the Roosevelt Memorial is discreet, dignified and informs the viewer, through a series of Roosevelt���s writings, of the President���s thoughts and philosophy. Whatever machinations transpired during the journey that resulted in the construction of the Roosevelt, Jefferson, Lincoln, King and other similar memorials in Washington, in the event, they are all of a piece, cut from the same cloth, speaking the language of beaux arts classical tributes.
