EDITORIAL H illary Clinton introduced me to Alice Walton. Alice had a vision for her beloved Fayetteville, Arkansas, which she saw in its near idyllic sylvan position in the Arkansas hills as a kind of new Jerusalem, a bastion of activity, as it had become a bastion of enterprise in the hands of Sam Walton, her legendary father. In the early 1990s, Alice shared with me her vision of a new airport for Fayetteville, one that would not only serve as a hub for Arkansas��� three distinctive regions���the low country, the Ozark mountains and the plains���but would connect the state to the world. The rice, dry goods, poultry and financial sectors in Arkansas were booming and the most important political leader in the world would soon hail from Arkansas. I was living in Arkansas, working as a Deputy National Political Director on then-Governor Bill Clinton���s presidential campaign. As I walked back from the barn on Alice���s property where I had been watching her spectacular quarter horses, I looked at her Fay Jones designed house, where I was staying, anticipating a visit to the architect���s iconic Thorncrown chapel, which Alice was showing me after lunch. The soaring chapel, though employing the plainest of wooden construction materials and of modest scale, evokes the nobility and grandeur of Rheims and Cologne. In a later telephone conversation with Fay Jones, I invited him to participate in the first ever conference on design in a Presidential transition. Regrettably, he was ill, unable to attend.
