American gentlemen represented evoke nobility and
dignity. Tough Tony has
probably earned that
title because of the
tenacity and strength
required of swimmers,
implied by the MCHS
blue
and
white
swimming jersey he is
wearing. Steve wears
white pants, shirt and
long elegant trench coat
against a white field, his
features animating that
particular sea, his dark
sunglasses reflecting
Gothic arches, the entire
enterprise evoking an
urban spirituality.
One imagines that
aside from the strong
artistic value of Mike
Cockrill���s Ascension,
that Coulter chose
this painting because
both she and the
principal subject exude
strength of character.
