We noticed jeweled flocks of birds,
especially diamond and gemstone
plumed brooches in avian form.
Foremost are the Audubon printinspired brooches, delicate
Chinoiserie-like essays. What
Thomas Merton called the birds of
appetite here feed upon luscious
branches, the whole composition
of diamonds, amethysts, tsavorites,
yellow sapphires and lacquer set
in 18K yellow gold. An even more
thickly encrusted bird is the Tiffanys
Hummingbird, of diamonds and
tsavorites of green, blue and pink set
in yellow gold.

Clip with moonstone,
sapphire and diamonds set
in platinum,
A brooch allows the jeweler unusual
freedom to create pictorial images;
birds and beasts are a natural and
charming subject. Perhaps also a
given creature is a symbol of the
woman wearing it; personally, I should
like to wear the fetching monkey
with amber colored spessartites and
diamonds set in yellow gold, her
curving tail a question mark. The most
flamboyant member of the Tiffanys
menagerie is the lobster brooch,
luxuriously mantled in pink sapphires,
diamonds and spessartites, with
bulging emerald eyes.
