Cathedral Fold
Beauty requires no comment and yet it invites it. Axis
Mundi���s buildings silence us with their presence yet
demand explication. Their buildings are beautiful and
recondite, and apart from the firm���s name, which speaks
volumes, their team is notably terse about the intention
and meaning of their work. Their work both invites and
resists interpretation; here, for what it���s worth, is mine.
In religion and mythology the axis mundi is the center of
the world and the point of connection between heaven
and earth. Axis Mundi the firm creates many centers that
reach for the sacred, including the plan for a cathedral,
entitled Cathedral Fold, an accordion-like building that
towers like a skyscraper. But to my mind one of the firm���s
