Importantly, this years Holiday House comfortably meshes diverse styles among and within its nearly thirty rooms. Each room encapsulates, through color, textures, textiles, artifacts, furnishings and artworks, environments inviting and supporting the inquisitive. This horn of design plenty represents a substantial sea-change from the sparse chambers created and/ or exhibited by many designers in recent years. It also engages the warm, inviting and friendly design scheme in a fruitful exchange with the modern. There seemed to be, although perhaps unconscious, the acknowledgment that the Grand Tour of Life, and its places and accompanying artifacts, should have pride of place in interior design. Eric Cohlers new book, Cohler on Design, published by Monacelli Press (who had a bookstore at the Holiday House) stressed the importance of the Grand Tour, now a centuries old endeavor, one that enriched the lives of 18th century participants as much as a modern version of the same does for 21st century adherents. Designer after designer affirmed this tale, the holiday theme assisting them in the journey.
