analogy is just right, for what knits his various talents and
interests together is a process he calls 'by way of these eyes,' a
form of aesthetic accumulation and filtering that informs the
textiles he produces, the rooms he designs, the magazine he
re-creates each month, and – as handsomely reflected in our
current exhibition at the American Museum – the photographs
he both collects and makes.
The most significant aspect of this third realm of Christopher's
life – his role as a collector – is that he doesn't collect in a vacuum.
The princely apartment that he and Constantino share on
7th Avenue in Chelsea is filled not only with his collection of
photographs but also with Hudson River landscapes, African
