"I like strong, bold colors," says Van Doren, "even if I'm
painting a placid scene." He notes that when he once
took classes at the National Academy in New York, his
instructor, landscape painter Reeve Schley, told him
"painting is all about color."
La Serenissima, the city-state once known as the
Most Serene Republic of Venice, also has summoned
Van Doren's literary heritage. In September, publisher
David R. Godine will release "An Artist in Venice",
an illustrated book in which Van Doren recounts his
