personal experiences of painting in this alluring city over
a period of 25 years. "It will have thirty-five images, but
it's actually more text-driven," he says. Altogether he
has visited Venice 15 times, spending as long as four
or five months on occasion. "The light there is good; it
envelops the place because the buildings are low
and it's often reflected in the water." He also likes the
city's "mysterious nooks and crannies of shade and
shadow." Using an old European winemaker's term, he
refers to the picturesque crumbling and chipped stucco
of venerable Venetian buildings as " 'noble rot.' "
