C
arol Egans decoration of a bright white TriBeCa
loft takes icons of 1950s and 1960s design, mostly
Danish Modern, and inflects them with new liveliness
and lightheartedness. In her hands these already
modern artifacts don a freshness, even humor, that is
pure 21st century, and will
look fresh for decades to
come. Egan is the only
decorator I can think
of who can lacquer a
room black, install brown
furniture and still create a
look of lightness.
The walls of this loft,
as aforementioned, are
bright white and window
treatments consist of
simple blinds. But with
upholstery and artworks,
Egan has brought in color
and pattern that makes
this apartment anything
but a white box. Fifties furniture is a study in contrasts
between the rectilinear and the curvilinear, and in every
room Egan makes the most of this play of planes and
parabolas, the clash of the straight and severe with some
of the almost amoeba-like forms of that era.
